The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to conduct gull research and weather monitoring studies in Glacier Bay National Park (GLBA) and marine mammal and bird surveys through the Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) of National Parks Inventory and Monitoring Program. The NOAA Fisheries Permits Division A second SNOTEL, at Nuka Glacier, is not operated the Kenai Fjords, but is located just outside the park's boundary. Several Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) have also been set up, in or near the park, as part of the Southwest Alaska Network of the park service's Inventory and Monitoring Program. These positions are a part ot the Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN). In 1998, the NPS initiated a natural resource Inventory and Monitoring Program. The purpose of the program was to develop a baseline inventory of significant natural initiated in the National Park Service s (NPS) Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN), which con-sists of the following parks: KEFJ, KATM, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, and the Alag-nak National Wild River. Glacier extent mapping has been completed in KEFJ and KATM. This National Park Service Attention was centered chiefly around two regions, namely, the Alaska Railroad belt and southwestern Alaska. The Matanuska Valley has climatic conditions similar to those of the Dakotas. A network of wagon and automobile roads connects this region with points on the Alaska Railroad.
